Tsum Valley Trek is a mysterious and magical valley located in a far-flung region of Gorkha district in northwestern Nepal. It is known as BeyulKyimolung in locally spoken Tibetan language which translates to “Holy Hidden Valley of Happiness”. It is indeed a hidden hub of happiness where spirituality meets natural beauty. In the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche described Tsum Valley as Holy Valley of Bliss, and now 13 centuries later, the mystical and spiritual aura of the valley is still intact. However, it can be attributed to the fact that the remote valley was a restricted region up until 2007 AD. The region is largely unexplored in comparison to other trekking routes, with relatively virgin and less beaten paths waiting to be traveled.
During the Tsum valley trek, we will mainly explore two remote Himalayan villages lying north to the Manaslu region named Chumchet and Chhekampar. Since the region was once the part of Tibet, it looks and feels very much different than any other places in Nepal. Tsum’s people – Tsumbas – belong to Tibetan origin and thus have their own unique culture, dialect, art, and religion. Very few trekkers have set foot in this mysterious valley which for centuries has been an important trade link to Tibet.
The starting and ending point of the Tsum valley trek is Arughat, a small village in Gorkha. It is a seven hours drive from Kathmandu. During the first half of the 18-day-long trek, we will ascend the Budi Gandaki Valley passing through a blend of terraced fields, hilly villages and dense forests. As we trek away from the Manaslu trail and enter the Tsum region, it will indeed feel like entering a magical place where the time has stood still for hundreds of years. While trekking on higher altitude, we will pass through several alpine woods and glacial rivers. Throughout the trek, we can enjoy the welcoming hospitality of the native inhabitants. We will trek down through the lower Budi Gandaki regions of Chumling, Philim, and SotiKhola. We will also visit ancient and important monasteries of the region such as Mu Gompa and RachenGompa. Mu Gompa is the largest monastery in the region and houses some of very important religious books on Buddhism along with an ancient life-size statue of Buddha Avalokiteshwara. The monastery is believed to have been built in the 1800s.
One of the main highlights of the Tsum Valley Trek is the amazing views of some of the tallest peaks in the world. Some of the notable peaks seen during the trek are Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), the majestic Ganesh Himal massif to the south, SringiHimal to the north, and Mt. Buddha and Mt. Himchuli to the west.
Tsum Valley Trek is one of the most monitored regions in Nepal due to its closeness with Tibet. The trekkers first need to acquire a special permit from the Nepal Government. Team Himalaya’s Tsum Valley Trek itinerary has been designed meticulously to ensure that our trekkers get the opportunity to marvel at the nature and the ancient civilization.

I never thought the trek would be so enjoyable overlooking beautiful views of surrounding dramatic landscapes. Tsum Valley was just magical, it was out of this world, a real hidden Shangri-La of Nepal Himalayas. Although the cost was much higher than other normal treks, with special permits to enter the restricted areas of Tsum Valley. But it was worth it, enjoyed every hour of walking and the villagers was so warm and friendly. It was hard to believe that I could be in a remote corners of Himalayas, surrounded by high towering peaks.
One of the best trek and recommendable to other interested trekkers who likes being on tranquil and remote places. Away from main flow of trekkers this is the trek to Tsum Valley, far from the maddening crowds of modern civilization.
Thanks to Team Himalaya Treks for organizing this special treks for us, enjoyed every moments.
Enjoy the popular trekking and tour packages in Nepal Himalayas. 2023.
