Nar and Phu are two distinct, hidden valleys located in the beautiful Manang region of Annapurna region of Western Nepal. A military-restricted area up until 2003, the region is perfect trekking destination for those trekkers who want to travel to even more far-flung and isolated remote Himalayan valleys, away from the bustling crowd of trekkers. Located in the rain shadow of Annapurna Circuit, Nar Phu Valley lies just north of the colossal Annapurna. Trek to these hidden gems comprise of enriching experiences like exploration of the otherworldly natural wonders, ancient and fascinating culture, and being in a very close vicinity of awe-inspiring mountains.
The 21-day long trek boasts of being jam-packed with dramatic landscapes that stretch from rice and paddy fields to dense rhododendron, pines, oaks, and fir forests to windswept arid valleys. This is one of the most outstanding journeys you will embark on in the Annapurna region, which will take you to off-beaten trails for a week, before joining back on the classic and popular Annapurna route to Jomsom after making a journey through two incredible Himalayan passes of Kang-La and Thorong-La Passes which lie at elevations of 5,332m and 5,416m respectively. From these passes, we can have amazing views of mountains like Annapurna II at 7,937 m, Annapurna IV at 7,525 m, Gangapurna at 7,455m, and several other peaks over 6,000 meters. Another main highlight of the journey is trekking down to Mustang district, which is also known as Land Beyond the Himalayans. The windswept, arid, and lusty landscapes of Mustang are totally different than the lush forest trails you trekked through. In Mustang, we will visit the famous Muktinath temple, which is a very important shrine for Hindus and Buddhists alike.
The trek begins with a scenic bus ride from Kathmandu to Beshi Shahar of Lamjung District. Nestled in the foothills of Mt. Lamjung, Beshi Shahar is a bustling economic hub of the region, where you can indulge in some last-minute shopping for the trek. From Beshi Shahar, we will trek through beautiful mid-hill towns and villages like DHarapani and Kotto. From Kotto, we will trek to Dharamshala, which in itself is a prominent Buddhist hub with its ornately-built ancient monasteries. From here, we will trek to Phu village through Kyang. After a full-day exploration of Phu village, we will trek further uphill to reach Nar village through Nar Phedi. From Nar village, we will hike up to the enthralling Kang La Pass, which is a perfect encapsulation of thrill, adventure, and gratification. After crossing the Kang La Pass, we will move on to our next adventure destination, Thorong La Pass via Manang. After successfully crossing the adrenaline-pumping Thorong La Pass, we will reach a new district altogether, Mustang. After trekking through the windswept valleys of Mustang, we will trek down to Jomsom, from where we will catch a flight to Lake City of Pokhara, where we can chill and enjoy some laid-back time after a long, hard trek. In this way, Nar Phu & Kangla-Thorang-la pass trek is a complete trekking package, that offers you the best of Nepal’s both cultural and natural heritages.
Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu received by Team Himalaya staff.
On arrival meet our TH staff for courtesy transfer to respective hotels in the heart of Kathmandu at Thamel area, an interesting place for shopping and having meals in one of the many world class restaurants, pubs and bakery.
Our guide will inform on details regarding trek to Nar Phu & Kangla -Thorang-la.
Day 02: In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour at places of interest.
Morning after breakfast at given time our city and cultural guide will guide you in and around Kathmandu at places of interest and importance, as Kathmandu Valley is full of World Heritage Sites the holy Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath (Little Tibet), Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) & monasteries, ancient Kings Palaces and courtyard in Kathmandu; after an interesting sightseeing back to the hotel, preparation for the trip to Nar Phu & Kangla – Thorang-la trek.
Day 03: Drive to Jagat 1,290 m via Beshsisar 800 m – 08 hrs.
A scenic long drive of 8 hours to Jagat village, which is quite interesting on the Nepal’s main highway following the Trisuli river for a while and then heading west with views of Ganesh, Langtang Himal and Annapurna, Manaslu range of peaks. On reaching at Dumre in the middle of Kathmandu / Pokhara highway, our route diverts towards Jagat passing large town of Beshisar and then on the dirt jeep road to Jagat village located in the mid hills. On arrival at Jagat village transfer into nice and simple lodge for overnight stop in this interesting farm village.
Day 04: Trek to Dharapani 1,920 m – 05 hours.
From Jagat village starting the first day walk on the gradual winding trail to Chamje, near raging Marsyangdi River and then crossing towards east bank into woodland, with views of Annapurna and Manaslu Mountain range pf peaks, then following a wide path all the way to Tal Besi a nice village located on Marsyangdi valley, after a lunch stop another few hours walk reaches Dharapani village for overnight stop, situated on the junction of this Annapurna circuit and around Manaslu trek.
Day 05: Trek to Koto 2,670 m – 05 hours.
On leaving Dharapani trekking along a wider path into tranquil rhododendron and pine woodland passing Bagachap and Danque, then to Timang village with its ancient Buddhist culture along with grand view of world 08th highest Mt. Manaslu 8,163m, after Timang village another hour walk leads to the village of Koto for overnight stop. Koto just 30 mins away from Chame a large major town and headquarter of Manang area.
Day 06: Trek to Dharmashala 3,230m – 05 hours.
From Koto our journey continues on leaving the main Annapurna circuit route for about a week till it meets at Manang, from Koto heading towards the least visited area of Nar & Phu, walk reaches a narrow valley between massive walls of high rock cliffs and into cool forest of pine and rhododendron trees, and then through farm huts, sheds and in a narrow gorge created by Pisang Peak and Kangguru Himal the walk leads upstream along Nar-Phu khola, our direction heading north towards isolated area into several small farm villages to reach at Dharmashala for overnight camp at this small farm settlement.
Day 07: Trek to Kyang 4,100 m – 6 hrs.
On leaving Dharmasala walk continues towards higher north, as the trekking progress leading to Phu region in complete wilderness, around this country opportunity of seeing Blue sheep, Snow Leopards. As the walk passes into several cattle herder’s huts following Phu Khola to reach at Kyang village for overnight camp.
Day 08: Trek to Phu village 4,080 m – 06 hours.
Morning walk heading to our one of the main destination to Phu valley, journey continues towards Phu Khola and then downhill to river, walking along the river bank, after crossing a stream heading to a climb into Phu valley and into a gorge then reaching an area where Nar Phu valley opens up, after an interesting walk of the day on the summer pasture lands reaching at Phu village for overnight camp.
Day 09: Rest at Phu village and explore Phu Valley
An extra day here in Phu village to explore and visit its old monastery and this interesting village which helps in acclimatization before heading two high passes of Kang la and Thorang la, a short hike around this mystical village which is near to Shangri-la, visit of Tashilkhang and Samdu Choling Monastery and Kyauchyu water fall, here at Nar and Phu villages the local people has a strong connection and with an influence of Tibetan lifestyle, religion, traditions and cultures. This village consists of near 30 houses for 100 to 150 people.
Day 10: Trek to Nar Phedi 3,545 m – 06 hrs.
After a wonderful time at Phu village and with locals warm hospitality, our journey starts going back the same path with downhill walk into a narrow gorge, then the path leads downstream at Phu khola, though smaller villages of Yughat and many mani and chortens a Buddhist shrines, then leading to a flat and level ground of Nar Phedi for overnight stay.
Day 11: Trek to Nar Gaon 4,206 m – 06 hrs.
Today’s walk follows the Phu Khola for few hours, then reaching to a newly built steel suspension bridge over the raging Phu Khola, from here walk leads to a steep uphill then reaching a flat gradual trail for few hours and then concluding the day at famed Nar village for overnight stop.
Day 12: Trek to Kang La Base Camp 4,530 m – 05 hrs.
After a great interesting time around Naar village, journey starts heading towards western direction, the morning walk carry’s on with a pleasant walk into a small forest of firs and pine trees, then leaving the tree lines behind towards barren country trekking for few hours, then with a long slow climb through lateral moraine of Temdenzon khola, trek continues for another couple of hours on this nice gradual path, then finally reaching at the base of Kang la pass at 4,530 m for overnight stop on a flat grassy field.
Day 13: Cross Kangla Pass 5,322m trek to Ngawal 3,650 m – 07 hrs.
An adventurous day of this trip crossing over first pass of this trip, starting earlier with striking view of Pisang Peak and Chulu Far East Peak, trek heads to cross a stream over a bridge and leading to a climb up to Kangla pass top at 5,322 meters high, this is the highest point before Thorang-la, Kangla Pass offers beautiful views of Annapurna wide massif range, Chulu Peaks, Lamjung Himal and number of peaks of Annapurna Himalayan range, after an amazing scenery, walk downhill through Julu village and then to overnight stop at Ngawal village. From Kangla pass reaching into Manang valley onto popular scenic trail of Annapurna circuit route.
Day 14: Trek to Manang 3,450 m – 04 hrs.
A different change walking to Manang with the last camping at Ngawal and for a week in the hidden Nar Phu valley area, morning walk heads on to Manang valley, then reaching at Humde a large village with an airstrip, from here three hours of pleasant scenic walk brings to Manang village through Braga village with its very old monastery, which is worth a visit in this old Braga monastery with old Buddhist relics, ancient wall painting and frescos, offering stunning views of Annapurna’s Himalaya, after Braga an hour walk reaches at Manang village and its wide windswept valley, in Manang overnight stop in cozy nice lodge, this village with houses in traditional Tibetans style and rich Buddhist culture.
Day 15: Trek to Yak Kharka 4,110 m – 04 hours.
After a wonderful rest at Manang, morning journey leads towards Ghunsang village on the winding uphill trail to Yak Kharka, an impressive walk on this high altitude with fabulous views of snow capped mountains, then reaching Yak Kharka a small place with 3-4 lodges, offering incredible views of Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Chulu Peaks.
Day 16: Trek to Thorong High Camp 4,600 m – 04 hrs.
From Yak Kharka getting into much higher terrain towards Thorang-la, leading to cross a bridge with a climb along Jarjung river bank, on the narrow trail to reach at Thorung Phedi, from here an hour steep climb to the overnight stop at Thorang High Camp, to make it shorter for next day traverse over Thorang-la pass on time in the morning.
Day 17: Cross Thorong-La 5,416 m to Muktinath 3,800 m – 07 hrs.
Today, main highlight of this adventure, with an early breakfast setting off with a long undulating climb to the top of Thorang-la at 5,416 m / 17,700 ft, the highest of this journey. On reaching the top after a vigorous climb due to high altitude and thin air, greeted with awesome views of surrounding mountains from Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Mustang Himal to Annapurna II, III and Gangapurna mountain range, after catching mind blowing views descend to Muktinath at 3,800 meters. On reaching Muktinath for overnight stop, on this holy place of Hindus and Buddhists the word Muktinath literally means ‘the place for Nirvana or Liberation’.
Day 18: Trek to Jomsom 2, 715 m – 04 hours.
After Muktinath rest of the journey will be easier with moderate walks all the way after Thorang-la, morning walk with a drop of 1,200m of downhill to Kaligandaki river valley, this pleasant walk reaches the vast Kaligandaki river valley with a small break at Ekale bhatti. From here onwards gets windy in the afternoon time, from this place few hours walk to Jomsom,
Jomsom the headquarter of Mustang region with an airstrip located above Kaligandaki River. This town is in the centre or junction of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri circuit, Upper Mustang and to holy Muktinath route, afternoon with ample time to explore around Jomsom.
Day 19: Fly to Pokhara and transfer to hotel.
Morning transfer to Jomsom airport for a short scenic flight to scenic Pokhara, Pokhara valley another highlight of this fabulous trip, Pokhara regarded as the most beautiful place on this globe with awesome mountain views and natural surrounding with its serene lake Phewa.
Day 20: Drive back to Kathmandu – 06 hrs.
Morning a scenic drive to Kathmandu, after a wonderful memorable trip in the high mountains of Annapurna area, then on reaching Kathmandu transfer to respective hotels with afternoon free at leisure.
Day 21: International departure homeward bound.
Last day in Nepal with wonderful memorable time in Himalaya trekking Northern Annapurna with Nar Phu & Kangla – Thorang –la with Team Himalaya and transfer to airport for the flight back home or to respective destination.
